On Monday, November 10th North Sevier basketball hopefuls took the court for a chance to prove to Coach Story and Larsen what they had and that they could benefit the basketball program. As the players show their dedication to the coaches for this upcoming season, the coaches are working hard to prepare the players for this upcoming year.
Day one was held like a normal in-season practice would be with a schedule to frame their work out off of. The day was full of drills that would expose player’s strengths and weaknesses. Coach Story always has a “Quote of the Day” to get the players thinking throughout the practice. Day one’s quote was, “Are you training according to your aspirations?” Coach Story repeated this several times in practice. After hearing this quote several times the players went harder, scared that somebody was working harder than they were.
After wrapping up the first day Coach Story was approached for a quick interview. He was asked what he saw that he liked and was excited about, “There was a lot of leadership, communication was good, returning starter, there are some young people that got a ways to go but it was fun.” In this interview Coach Story was asked to put day one of tryouts into one word, after some thinking he said, “Leadership.”
After a rough season last year, not qualifying for the state tournament, I asked, “How will the team get there this year?” He replied with, “All our returning varsity starters have a lot of varsity experience, good ball handling, we will go as far as our D (defense) takes.” To get a step ahead of the other region teams five North Sevier players attended PGC (Point Guard College) with the entire coaching staff. In the interview Coach Story was asked if PGC changed the coaches and players. “Absolutely,” said Coach “We are much more positive.”
A new coach was added to the staff, Coach Nolan Anderson, former head and assistant coach. When he was asked what he was most excited about he replied with, “Just excited to help them get better. I like to teach people who work hard.”
The girl’s basketball team has been working extremely hard at tryouts. Coach Larsen knows it’s going to be a difficult year, coming off of second place at the state championships means other teams are preparing to play you. North Sevier is one of the teams to beat.
While observing their first day of tryouts I noticed the team was rather small compared to last year. One major thing the team is working on this year is rebounding. Considering their team is fairly small they are going to try some new things when it comes to defense so they will be prepared to play these taller teams.
Five players from the girl's basketball team also traveled to PGC. They were taught many different skills there and will definitely pay off this season. When player Meisha Johnson was asked what she learned that she can apply to this season she replied with, "I learned how to react to mistakes positively and that it is okay to make mistakes. I also learned that you are either contributing or contaminating in every situation you are in. You should always be a contributor."
In an interview with Coach Larsen she was asked what good things she noticed in the first day of tryouts. Her response was, “I noticed good communication which is usually hard to get this early.” She also has some advice for this years players, “Play everyday like it’s your last. You never know when you might not play again. If you’re not failing, you’re not trying hard enough. Try doing the hard things.”
Both teams are working extremely hard this year. These two days of tryouts are the start of a great season for these two teams. Come out and show your support for our teams and lets hope for a successful season full of surprises.
